Rock and troll, all day long
I had the displeasure of getting trolled yesterday. Trolled hard, all the way to the woodshed. Thinking back on it today, I keep wondering why I let myself get so lathered up about an anonymous prick online. At several points in the conversation, there was a clear breaking point at which I should have walked away. More precisely, I should have walked away at literally the whole time. But no, like Melanie Griffith at the plastic surgeon's office, I couldn't leave well enough alone. It always felt like there was a bit more air to clear, or something just right I could say to make it end better than it had become and remained. Instead, the "conversation" just kept becoming more grotesque. (I'm talking to you, Melanie.)
It was like a parody of two love sick teens prolonging a phone call - "You hang up," "No, you hang up!" - except that the person on the other end was a sadistic loser trying to drive me out of my mind. This particular guy had dug up some personal information on me and then piled on a heaping helping of lies and innuendo - such tactics are the rhetorical jaunty hat and pointy shoes of the troll uniform. He did all of this in response to losing a brief argument regarding employer coverage of birth control. So yeah, I completely had that one coming?
By the end of it, was burnt to a crisp and emotionally wrought. Had a hard time sleeping, in fact. Not just because of how perversely personal it got, but because it's hard to know whether that kind of person is going to keep harassing you. After all, he took the unprompted time to research enough information to torment me... who's to say he's not going to keep doing it for the sheer despicable enjoyment of it? And I, silly me, made the mistake of feeding the troll.
This is the point at which this post could essentially go one of two ways: I could go the inspirational route and spout platitudes about how important it is to drop unnecessary spiritual luggage when it starts weighing you down ("You can buy a new bag at your soul's destination!") or I could tell you about how unsafe it is to be a woman with even the tiniest online presence ("Steel yourselves, ladies").
Instead, I'm just going to walk away.
I'm learning.
